Musah spoke at a press conference while on international duty this month, with the United States midfielder asked about the challenges usually associated with fasting and how it actually differs in a national team environment as opposed to a normal club setup. At no point is he by himself and so always has something to set his attention to.

Musah said: "Of course it's different because, normally, I'm going to training and then going home. It's kind of different here because I'm not going home. I'm always in the hotel with the boys and everything, so it's nice actually that I'm here because the boys, after training, keep me busy. I get to be with them and then time flies and, eventually, it's time to eat, so that's what's up."

Musah is not alone when it comes to footballers fasting during Ramadan, with high profile superstars like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Antonio Rudiger among those also observing Islam's holy month. But it can be a nutritional challenge for players observing Ramadan not eating or drinking between dawn and dusk, which is intended to demonstrate patience and encourage spiritual reflection.
